Teaching Strategies Guide

Strategies with enough implementation detail to actually try on Monday.

Most teaching advice fails not because it's wrong but because it's underspecified. "Increase engagement" and "differentiate your instruction" describe destinations, not routes. This guide tries to give the routes.

Start With Sequencing

Before any individual strategy: the order material arrives in determines how much of it lands.

Check prior knowledge first. New learning attaches to old. A five-minute diagnostic at the start of a unit tells you what's actually there rather than what should be, and it routinely finds gaps that would otherwise sink the next three weeks.

Break new content into small steps. Working memory is small. Present one idea, check it, then the next. A lesson that introduces six concepts before the first check has taught approximately zero of them.

Novices need more structure than experts. Discovery works well for learners with a base to build on and badly for those without one. Explicit instruction first, inquiry once there's something to inquire with.

Revisit deliberately. Material covered once is material forgotten. Build retrieval of earlier topics into later lessons — this costs five minutes and returns more than almost anything else in this guide.

Explicit Instruction, Done Properly

The core cycle, which is more demanding than it sounds:

  1. State the objective in terms of what students will be able to do.
  2. Connect to prior learning explicitly. Don't assume they'll make the link.
  3. Model it. Work an example aloud, narrating the decisions — including the ones that don't work out. Silent demonstration teaches the steps but not the thinking.
  4. Guided practice. Students work while you circulate and correct. This is where errors get caught cheaply.
  5. Check for understanding before releasing them. Not "any questions?" — see below.
  6. Independent practice. Only once the check has passed.
  7. Review. Same lesson, next lesson, next week.

Checking for Understanding

"Does everyone understand?" reliably produces nodding and no information. Techniques that produce actual information:

  • Cold call rather than taking volunteers. Volunteers are a biased sample.
  • Every-student responses — mini whiteboards, hand signals, a show of fingers for a multiple-choice option. You see the whole room at once.
  • Exit tickets — one question at the end, answered on paper. Five minutes to read, and they tell you what tomorrow's lesson needs to be.
  • Ask them to explain, not to confirm. "Why does that work?" is diagnostic; "got it?" is not.
  • Deliberately include a wrong answer and ask which it is and why.

Questioning

The quality of questions largely determines the quality of thinking in a room.

  • Wait time. Three to five seconds of silence after a question. It feels excruciating and it roughly doubles the length and quality of responses.
  • Ask why and how, not only what. Recall questions have their place — retrieval practice is valuable — but a lesson entirely made of them produces no reasoning.
  • Follow up. "What makes you say that?" turns an answer into an argument.
  • Distribute questions. Track who you're asking; nearly everyone under-asks part of the room without noticing.

Engagement

Engagement is a symptom, not a strategy. Students disengage for identifiable reasons: the work is too hard, too easy, or has no visible point.

  • Match difficulty to readiness. Both directions of mismatch produce the same behaviour.
  • Make the purpose visible. "This is on the exam" works on some students. "This is how you'd actually decide X" works on more.
  • Give genuine choice — of topic, format, or order. Autonomy is one of the more reliable motivational levers.
  • Use real contexts. A worked example from something students have seen beats an abstract one.
  • Vary the mode. Twenty minutes is a long time in any single format.
  • Build in success. Nothing sustains effort like recent evidence that effort worked.

Differentiation Without Doubling Your Workload

Three versions of every worksheet is unsustainable and mostly unnecessary. What works within normal preparation time:

  • Same task, different support. One problem set; scaffolds, worked examples, or sentence starters available to those who take them.
  • Same task, different depth. Add extension questions at the end rather than building a separate task.
  • Flexible grouping. Regroup by current need, not by fixed ability. Fixed grouping becomes a prophecy.
  • Vary time, not content. Some students need longer for the same material.
  • Target the gaps you actually found, not the ones you assume. This is what the diagnostic was for.

Why Personalized Learning Is Key to Academic Success

Feedback That Changes Something

  • Specific and actionable. "Add evidence to your second paragraph" beats "good effort".
  • Timely. Feedback arriving after the work is finished and forgotten changes nothing.
  • About the work, not the person. Praise for ability makes difficulty threatening.
  • Followed by an opportunity to act on it. Feedback with no chance to revise is just a grade with adjectives.
  • Less is more. Three prioritized comments get acted on; fifteen annotations get skimmed.

Group Work That Isn't Just Seating

Collaboration fails predictably when the task doesn't need collaboration.

  • Choose tasks with genuine interdependence — something one student can't simply do alone while others watch.
  • Assign roles and rotate them.
  • Make individual accountability visible. Group product plus individual check.
  • Teach the collaboration skills. Disagreeing productively is a taught skill, not an assumed one.

Academic outcomes rest on non-academic foundations. Attention, emotional regulation, and belonging aren't distractions from the curriculum — they're preconditions for it.
